Pre-Revolution 2020 letter to my readers.

Dear All,

I cannot remember the last time I wrote a personal blog entry. There was a time, not so long ago; I used to do this regularly.  Twitter spoils us. You can get away with posting one line, and have everyone see it immediately. However, Twitter doesn’t allow elaboration of thoughts, or the feelings behind them. Mostly it is ok, but every now and then, I feel the need to share more with my readers. This happens especially before a book launch. It is the time when I am most vulnerable emotionally, and expressing myself helps.

So, here were go again. Another book releases in less than twenty days. Revolution 2020, something I have lived with for the last two years, is finally going to be out there in the world on October 8th 2011. Countless opinions shall follow, and the book will finally find its place in the world. I remember the how nervous I had felt right before the release of 2 States, my last book in October 2009. I had gone to ISKCON temple in Mumbai the night before and blogged about it later. I do not feel as much nervousness, at least as yet. Maybe I have matured, maybe I am confident about Revolution 2020, and maybe I am just numb. I need to get away for a while, and will share more about that in a moment.

A lot has changed for me in the two years since the last book. More than anything, I think the readership is wider and broader than it ever was before. This is for the following reasons:

  1. My last book 2 States, became the most widely read of all my works. For the first time, I saw housewives and senior citizens pick up my book in large numbers, perhaps connecting to the universal theme of marriage and parental approval.
  2. After 2 States, 3 Idiots, an adaptation of Five Point Someone, came out in December 2009. The movie did extraordinarily well, and reached places where none of my books had reached. Almost anywhere in India I travelled, I found a new set of readers for my books, who had picked them up after watching 3 Idiots.
  3. In 2009, I started doing columns for English and Hindi newspapers. Every two weeks since then, I have had a chance to share my thoughts about the nation with a totally different set of readers – the people who read editorial pages, but not necessarily my books. Both TOI and Dainik Bhaskar have readership in crores, and it will be interesting to see if my column readers pick up Revolution 2020.
  4. In the last two years, Twitter and Facebook exploded as well. Millions of readers now connect with me through these two sites and they are a source of constant support for me.

In light of the above developments, it would be interesting to see the initial response to Revolution 2020. I try to not think about the magnitude of expectations, and for that reason I think it would be a good idea to get away for a while.  Hence, even though the book launch is right around the corner, starting tomorrow I shall be in Thailand for a yoga retreat for a week. I will be somewhat disconnected from India and I think that will help settle my mind right before the launch. The program is supposed to be quite tough, as you don’t really eat much the entire week (a glass of juice per day is what I have been told!). Thus, in the middle of all these high profile fasts in the country, I’d be getting away to do my own, and mostly for my own sake.

On the personal front, my twin boys have grown up. They are seven years old now. They were born just two months after my first book came out. Thus, in some ways they reflect my age as an author – still quite young, and hopefully, a long way to go. It is fun to be at home and watch them grow up, even though they disturb me every now and then from my writing. But as Krish says in 2 States – ‘what is life without being disturbed by the right people?’

Anusha is busy at work. She is Chief Operating Officer at her bank, which as you can guess from the title, is quite a big deal. People often call her superwoman. She has maintained her career, brought up twins well and handled a crazy husband. I think she is quite a role model for Indian women.

Apart from books, I spend my time doing talks, which have grown tremendously over the last two years. It is from these talks that Revolution 2020 was born. The talks help me stay connected to India. At the same time, they make my schedule hectic. In the last one year alone, I visited 55 cities.

Hence, I have become terrible at replying to calls, messages and keeping in touch. One of my goals after Revolution 2020 is to simplify life, be more selective in what I choose to do, and make more time for family, friends and myself.

For now however, I have to bring my new baby to the world. Revolution 2020 carries fantastic feedback from the people who have read it, so frankly I am not too worried. To keep things simple, I would do the initial launches only in Mumbai and Delhi, and then get to other cities in a few weeks. I will post details on the same later. This time the title of the book doesn’t reveal so much about the story, but I think that will add to the fun of reading it. I can’t wait for your feedback.

I hope the book launches go well. After all that, in December, I have also promised my family that I will take them on a nice long vacation, especially after the book launch madness, and a part of me is looking forward to that as well.

Thank you once again for your constant support through the years – in almost everything I have attempted to do. I always say: my personal goals in life are already met. I now live for people who have made me – you, my readers.

With that, I better go pack for my 7-day escape before the madness.

Don’t be serious, be sincere.

Love,

Chetan

    Hey Chetan,

Took up R2020 recently and i must admit the fact it din’t took me long to reach the end just to feel the revolution that was coded at the end of the story.. a great piece of work in terms of realization of how everyone is responsible for doing their bit in order to achieve a state of which everyone talks of, dreams of, is responsible of. We ofter claim it is time or circumstances that are responsible for what we do, how we do and for whom we do but is it only the external scenario or moreover is it we who is more responsible for our make or break? It was good to learn the burried basics again.

    Way to go…

    Hi,
This is my 1st time i read ur blog posts, searched you on facebook, added your profile hoping it to be genuine and thought about sending an email.
i just finished R2020. As most of ur readers i could not take off Gopal from my mind. The character looked very very genuine. I cud not hold my tears for Gopal’s agony phase in kota where despite knowing why he is there he slips down n down for one gal he left behind. The urge to get in touch to ur gal: looking for PCO, online offline game etc evrything looked so so real and it actually reminded me of a friend. So many things and only dis much space…I can only say you are superb and i love ur work and the way u create ur each character. If they are for real ..please tell Gopal ” I love you ” and like ur other fans we want Gopal to cum out of his whiskey glass and settle down to become a good husband and good father. Can we see this Gopal too???

A comment from nearing 50 pious and patriotic.I’ve read ur 3 books inclu R2020. I’m impressed by your versatile story telling skills to put across the truth in a subtle manner so that the youth gets an insight where the social and civil texts fail to do to them.Reality is best expressed in ur wonderful works. However I only find a common feature of ur books like pre-marital sex a vicious one that may be a thorn in a rose. I’m worried if our youth think that this is something acceptable, this may not spell good for our culture which I still beleive is the best. I opine give people what they deserve, give gopal aarti, raghav power to change. That wud be nice.

    is R2020 a true story..??

  12. I Seriously Think Aarti was a hypocrite and very Diplomatic too as she didn’t even deny Gopal and din’t even accept him. She just loved the Bank Balances of both the boys. She Seriously should’ve gone with Gopal in the end, And Gopal is anyday better than Raghav. Gopal, If You’re real as in if this book is a non-fiction, based on a true story that is, then i’d like to tell you, You Are A Very Good person. :) If i were you i’d have told Dainik to hire back Raghav but i would Never have given the love of my life back.:) It takes guts to do that. and Chetan Bhagat, WOW.. This Is the Awesomest Book I’ve Ever Read. Full-On Entertainment and Suspense too. Loved It. (:

  13. it’s gr8 the 1st half relates me but i have some questions after reading all your R2020 although the ending is same with me . y did gopal let go off Aarti ?? Also u never mentioned y aarti didnt approve of gopal b4 .. i mean did she actualy luvd him or was it because raghav.actually reminded me of a friend. So many things and only dis much space…I can only say you are superb and i love ur work and the way u create ur each character. Sir R2020 is a real story or wat? I wish to meet Gopal.

  15. Rekha says:

Sir after that what happened to Gopal? Please write the second part also for this story.pls pls pls

  16. Darshan says:

Chetan, Revolution 2020 was a good book, but not as good as your earlier editions. I found the whole book good but the bend made the story look dull. People might consider Gopal a Hero but i would consider him coward. The end has to be different. It is not a happy ending.Of course not every story has one, but this one deserved one. somehwere i felt the story waas scripted and not real.

I had certain loopholes to share on your story & have a real story to share. If you find it worth contact me at my email @ deepaksh11@rediffmail.com

Hats off to you again!!!! :)
It was one of the best books I have ever read… no book had ever made me cry and this one actually did…

Hello Chetan sir I recentely read your R2020 book. The end left a great effect on me. I read a lot of books and your 2 states and five point to someone tops my fav lists!

The end of R2020 I would say is what any true lover would do but being a person who loves happy love ending kept me little disappointed! But a real good story sir, will always be close to my heart.

Good luck with your upcoming stories. Looking forward sir!

  31. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala says:

Sir, I found R2020 an intersting read but was disheartened by the ending. You should have turned Gopal into an innocent person and given him Aarti. I know that Raghav is an innocent man and he should win in the end but Gopal loved Aarti more than anyone else. For the sake of true love they should have united. I really liked how you explained about corruption in the system of education. The book had a great story , had a nice pace and you kept the suspense alive till the end. Anyways now that the story has a sad ending we cannot do much about it. But you have an option. You should take the story forward. I know that this is an absurd suggestion but you should really do it. I am sure a major chunk of your fans would want you to do it. You can also write a triology or make a series. In the next book Gopal and Aarti should unite. Also Gopal and Raghav should come together and fight corruption in their own way. Give it a thought. U can make the readers more aware about corruption in India. They say ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL. So I think the next book should have a nice ending. We will really like to know what happened in the lives of Gopal, Aari and Raghav after that. I hope you will read my comment, not find it offending or irritating and give it a thought to take the story forward for US, UR FANS.

  32. Divyansh Kumar says:

    Hello Mr. Bhagat, Greetings,
well i reached in the middle half of R2020. i bought this book from chandigarh’s ISBT and it worked as a real friend through my journey. All characters seemed to be real, Hardworking Gopal, Deterministic Raghav and friend Aarti. Sir to your work I really want to say HATS OFF SIR. Now R2020 became my second favorite novel. You will glad to read that my First favorite novel is 2 States. Your work is really superb. Go on Chetan sir. Good luck.

  33. My husband read the book first and then suggested me as well.I am not the kind of person who reads books.I started reading it and soon finished it too.It was such a nice story but one thing which hurts me is that Arti should have been wid Gopal. He loved her so much.I was so much lost in the story that I started feeling that all the characters are true and just fell for Gopal.
    Is it a true story?
Well this was your first book which I read and will keep reading them.
Wish you good luck with your work Chetan.

  34. Sajith Kannoth says:

    Hi,
Just finished reading R 2020 yesterday. I read it in 2 days and the 2nd day I sat till 3.00 AM becoz I was curious about the ending… But soon after finishing and till this moment I am very upset and even lost my concentration in work :) .. I know this is just a book and major things are Chethan’s imagination, but I couldnt stop thinking about Gopal.. He is a Very good man… He is always sincere to Aarthi.. But in the end he became a Cheater before her… Even after he became good at heart he is a cheater before Aarthi, for her he lived his life… Its sad… very Sad…..If the story is true, I just want to travel to Varanasi, to meet her at hotel Ramadha and I want to tell her Gopal is good.. always good…

Thanx Chethan for such a marvelous book once again…

But next time.. No sad ending please… I cound not bear this situation anymore..:)

  36. To,
    Chetan Bhagat,
    Regards, Greetings, Wishes..
Although i’m a kind of person got bored from reading own B.tech books, even then i found myself very keen reading your “One Night At Call Center” and “2 States”. Now, being a hardcore fan of your simplicity and books of course; i’ve started reading “R-2020″ and getting involved in it. I hope i’m not following Gopal in my college life instead. It nearly touches me.

Apart from this, i’ve seen You in “ZINDAGI LIVE” enjoying and sharing some moments with audience..liked it a lot..
    Love You.

  37. shravya kyatham says:

ahhh… R2020 .. :) an awesome book infact.. :) like many other reader i couldnt stop thinking about it for days.. i feel so sad for gopal ..it shouldnt have ended that way .. :| anyway thats life and we all need to accept it.. this book makes us think ” are we doing our bit” ?? and i know that is the message u wanted to give. it was a great book though we end up in tears for the sad ending.. if the story was non-fiction i wish aarti shu knw the truth cox gopal was a honest person and loved her the most.. waiting for u next book to get published .. :) i just love the way u write :) gud luck sir

  42. Swathi, Bangalore says:

Finished reading ur book yday.. It had a big impact on me. It’s left a mark in my mind. Aarti shouldn’t have got close to Gopal. That made their friendship sour, spoiled Raghav n Gopal’s friendship, broke everyone’s hearts. I was wondering who could be the actors for the movie thats gonna b made from the book. Yes this novel deserves a second part, a somewhat exciting ending for Gopal next time.

  43. manoj kumar says:

Revolution 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!! really a good novel. I become very emotional when go through this book. The character of Gopal is very strong. The way he love the Arti is superb. Every girl has to take lesson from this book that, JO DIKHTA HAI WO SAHI NAHI HOTA HAI, YE TO GOPAL KA PYAR THA. I love the character of Gopal. Arti bhi achhi thi but use apna pyar nahi mil paya, jiski wo haqdar thi. Arti ka life to totally spoild ho gaya, wo Raghav se saadi kar ke khus to hui but pyar nahi mila, jitna milna chahiye tha. Raghav ko bina kuch kiye sab kuch mil gaya – Arti, Revolution ke liye Plateform (So called revolution). I have very sympathy with the Gopal and Arti (especially Gopal).

Please Chatanji, story ka end aisa nahi hona chahiye ki main character hi mar jaye.

Please REVOLUTION ka 2nd part jarur publish kijiyega in which the lead charcter Gopal ko apna LOVE wapas mil jaye.

Thank u for your all the 5 books. Waiting for your 6th book.

  44. siva says:

Hi sir, I have read R2020. I like very much. Is it a real story ? I want to meet Gopal atleast once in my life if he exist in real world ? Will you please tell sir ?

  45. Raj, Mumbai says:

    Hi Chetan Sir,
I have just finished reading R2020, the book was very interesting. It’s a great piece of work in terms of realization of how everyone is responsible for doing their bit in order to achieve a state of which everyone talks of, dreams of, is responsible of.

I would have liked if Aarti would be with Gopal beacause anyways Raghav before dating Aarti already knew that Gopal liked her, then why did he go for it. Also if he felt bad with his condition, he could have alwayz helped him getting into Dainik as he newaz did why did he let go off Aarti ?? Also you never mentioned why Aarti didn’t approve of Gopal before, I mean did she actually loved him or was it because Raghav was neglectin her and his decreasing bank balance accompanied with Gopals increasin one , she started liking Gopal. U did mention dat at dat time she didnt think the time was right, but that was definitely not the true reason.

P.S. If the story is true, I would love to meet all of them specially Gopal.

  46. abhilash says:

    dear chetan

revolution 2020 is masterpiece the way you narrates the story is making me seeing a movie

    GREAT WORK

  47. cnu says:

    hai chetan

You have great writing skills and great humour of expressions….i read each of ur books in that day itself…that were so interesting, emotional and heart touching

To all who liked gopal mishra, dont treat me as a critic, but he was not a loyal lover as he made such flithy joke, with two call girls at his office….he was not a loyal lover….honest son…or good friend….he always compared when the other did not…rahav revised subjects before he goes to exam…aarti chose the right one….she shudnt have indulged with gopal at all…that wud make the story luk mich great….love without loyalty is frutile

  48. Ram says:

    Hi to chetan,

First I would like to give all my best wishes to your book. I have just returned from London. Before going there I had read your first two books, but now I just finished wi revolution 2020 five mins ago. I was so touched by gopal’s character. I just have one quests and would like to get a real and original answer from you. Is this a real story and if so I would like to know war will happen once aarti reads your book. I would suggest gopal is a really a good person.

  49. vick says:

awesome book sir… and for all da commentators…
i wanna express one thing, dun be angry or sad dat it has a bad ending.. coz there are many gopals livin out here in the same way… my story is the same… just the characters n places are different.. thank you chetan for writing such a touchin story.. dis story is still goin on in ma life.. hope it has a good ending…
