Twitter Pause: Time to withdraw

Dear All,

I’ve not posted a personal blog entry for ages (apart from my column links). I’ve been quite active on twitter, a bit too active perhaps. It started around July last year, and then continued through the release of 2 States and 3 Idiots. I continued after that, essentially to stay connected to my readers. And twitter was fun – the silly one-liners, the inspirational quotes, the links to my columns and many times, just random musings was fun to share with the world.

However, that isn’t how writers operate. Well, at least when they are writing. I am an outgoing person, but during the writing process, I withdraw as much as I can. I can’t be a recluse or sit by the stream and write (though that remains a fantasy for me), but I do cut down on whatever I can.

The release of 2 States and 3 Idiots was an overwhelming time for me. I knew that I had to let the excitement and emotions related to it pass, before I jumped into a new project. Even otherwise, four books and two films in five years was too crazy a pace. I took some time off writing, did talks around the country, started a couple of columns, and of course, had loads of fun on twitter.

Alongside, I’ve worked on a straight movie script, a romantic comedy. It was something I did for fun, not for anyone in particular and to learn screenplays better. It’s looking good now, and let’s see if someone wants to make it.

But after all that, I think it is finally time to work on the next book. As always, I won’t reveal what the book is about until it is ready (nobody knows, not even close family).

Hence, the time to withdraw has come. This is how I have done all my books. I am out there, and then I am away for a while. I’ll reduce the talks, media interviews and general social interactions so that I can focus on the book. I am however, keeping my columns running (once every fortnight, TOI and Dainik Bhaskar), as they do get read by important people and offer a great opportunity to highlight issues faced by the country.

Most significant of all, this means, twitter has to stop. It’s hard giving up fun things, and I am going to miss interacting with my readers. However, I am not giving it up forever, just going to be away from it for a while – maybe six months or so, or,  until Feb 2011. My account is still there, but I won’t be tweeting much. I will however, tweet my column links for convenience, as and when they appear.

I will miss you all, but I need to do this. The characters of the next book are waiting.

I love you all for your support and try as I might, I will never be able to repay it. All I can say is – thanks.

Regards,
Chetan

    Dear CB,

Its very disappointing to read Twitter Pause., man im following u for a long time and loved ur tweets, single liner with more depths and meanings. Its ok if u r busy with ur new book., come back soon in asap.

All the best and keep tweeting, todays article (29.08.10) in TOI is mind blowing which is the voice of India which u have raised it. So many people said abt the event, but the way u have taken it in straight forward way was heart touching., At some point of view i was in thought of watching live these events but its better to say “No to CWG”

    Thank you,

    Santosh

    Mr. Bhagat

Good that you took a break – and give a respite to your “fans” to cool off.
Probably You are into a book with ‘four’ in title, as it is missing in your list so far.

Dear Chetan, I am glad that i will have one more book of urs….but for gods sake keep weritting in newspapers ….today only i went thru an other from urs and i cant tell u how hard u have hit at the right place to the bastards…self proclaimed leaders or CEO of game etc. But a aguy like u is not meant only for small thrills of writtings only I can see a leader emerging… with conviction and some vision. I am sure that u have lot that we don not know what u want to do and what u can do. Why dont u start a movement of ur own (as matter of fact it has already began). im always there to give up every thing for an endeavour of that sort. This is so stupid for the first time i get involved with a book….get to the writer….send him crazy texts and look at you….you take time off….thats fair in no way….i mean in 24 hours a day 10 mins to reply to us are enough….you can have the remaining 23 hours and 50 mins for you….sorry but your books have almost made you a possession….can’t help….say hello to Ananya….she’s hell of a lucky girl….atleast she can seek and asnwer or be the one sharing the story to know what happens next….

  14. Swetha says:

    Dear Chetan

You bring such happiness and hope into our lives. Please know how precious you are. You and your family s a part of my everyday prayers, thoughts. Every article u write, which always gives such wonderful SOLUTIONS, is Such an inspiration.

Something that s always struck me is the fact that Indian youth, in general, love India. They are Proud to be Indians, they want to work for India. Even if they go abroad to study and gain exposure, they all genuinely want to work for India.

It feels great to be in this country, where so much can be done. Everything feels young, new…wanting our loving touch and efforts. Every small kid deserves a chance. Every single one does.

U r a bringer of change here. Part of the wonderful transformation thats happening in this beautiful country. I m sure we can make this place Heaven. Cuz our country deserves it. It is truly the most wonderful place on earth to be in.

WWWWAAAAAIIIting for ur next book :) waiting to hear more wit, more thoughts from u :)

    Love
    Radhika

Once upon a time in a city (it can be any city :-) ) there was a beggar. This guy was having an uncommon habit of waiting in front of an office gate and collecting the end of Willis Classic cigarette of the owner of that office. Once the owner had thrown it after finishing the beggar collected it and somehow had been managing two/three puffs from that. One day the owner had thrown the end of his cigarette but it was Willis Navycut and he watched that the beggar did not collect it. He was surprised as he had been watching the beggar for long. He asked him that why the beggar did so. Do you know what did he say? He said that, “you can demote yourself but I can not. I can wait for the best” :-) . We can also wait for the best.

  30. Susanta says:

    Hi….new book it’s exciting…….waiting for the new one…….

  31. Ananth says:

There is a reason you’ve been able to write four books and 2 movie scripts in two years. You are a mediocre, at best, writer.

There should not be an audience for a pulp-fiction writer such as you. It pains me that the youth of India (and I include myself in this) have to listen to you and be inspired by you. How I wish you’d take a LOT of time out, hone your writing skills and write something that’s worth reading even when you’re not taking a dump.

  32. Soumya says:

Great…Happy to know that you r with new work….Waiting for your new book….All the best..We all will miss u in twitter…
