This is my guess what must have happened. Abhijat joshi, the Munna bhai fame must have been asked to write a story based on college campus, and the glamor adds if it’s an Engg college. Now Mr Joshi, as I pointed out the general “Indian” tendency, must have been in search ki bhai, aisi koi kahani agar likhi ho to kuch ‘inspiration’ le lii jaye. Then he got this magic book, called, FPS.. arre chalo chalo bahut achchi book hai… kuch utha lete hai. He took three years to write the scripts.. arre bhai kyo nahi lagega. Ab story waise ki waisi to nahi utha sakte hai na.. plaguarizm kehlayega.. so he must have gathered another 4-5 lesser known books to take ‘inspiration’from them (or may be he switched on his bulb of creativity to add masala like the two friends went on to search his friend, which is not in Chetan’s book), and finally the script was ready… haashhhh, bahut mehnat ki teen saal. Really, idhar udhar se uthakar twist karke ek nayi kahani banane me seriously bahut mehnat lagti hai (and I am serious, not joking- India mein research papers bhi aise hi likhe jaate hai, and I have seen PhD ‘scholars’ how much mehnat they put in ). Therefore the credit of this story must go to Abhijat.
Now what.. ab baat chupi to nahi reh sakti na. It was unfortunate that unlike the other 4-5 books from which Abhijaat copied, FPS was famous, a bestseller- written by an IIT-IIM graduate- bas yehi to Abhijaat se galti ho gayi. Aaakao ne kaha theek hai. Hum kuch karte ha so that our ass is legally saved. They called Chetan. Told- look, the story has some similarity with your film, but it’s just 2-3%. And we’ll give “proportional credit” to you. Not only that we’ll also sign an agreement giving you in writing that we’ll acknowledge ur name in the movie, and here is the compensation. After signing the agreement, you can meet Aamir and say that the movie is not based on ur book. and that he doesn’t even need to read it. Again this was a tactical move, since agar koi panga hota hai to aamir ki clean and clear image would save all those bladies in front of media. Chetan signed the agreement, took the money met Ammir and told accordingly.
When Chetan asked them to show him the script, he was told, “look- the movie is not based on your film. Then why we should show you the script and film before release, bhai IPR ka mamla hai”. Chetan- the poor intellectual guy aa gaya unke jhanse mein.
And rest is all what we saw on media….
An author is a creative person. He wants money, but not at the cost of taking away his credits of creativity. It hurts him/her when s/he finds that someone else is taking credits of his creativity. So what hurts Chetan is- why the film is not getting acknowledged as his story. But the internal film industry political equation, which is in favor of Abhijaat Joshi will not allow him to do so, because filmfare best story award jo lena hai Abhijaat ko. But why can’t he share this with Chetan. What’s wrong in that?
It’s an irony- but the fact is. INdia is full of copycats
So guys, it’s a lesson for us- be aware of all such bladies. And keep the copyright and IPR issues well in place in advance. And never sign an agreement based on verbal assurances. Ask for facts and evidence. Then only sign anything.
I became great fan of yours 2 years back, when i read FPS. I have read all 4 books and the recent one 2 state is awesome.
When i heard about 3 idiots movie, i wanted to watch only because it is based on FPS…. then i saw controversial between 3 idiots VS FPS in news and next day i watched 3 idiots, i will say it is awesome…. and credit should go to you for writing such a beautiful novel…. hats of you chethan.

‘Hello’ which was based one ‘One Night @ the Call Center’ gave all the due credits to him right from the making to Promos to Title Credits.They did not change anything in the book. But every one knows what happened at box office. Did anyone blame the author to moral responsibility for failure of ‘Hello’. If he has not taken moral responsility for failure of Hello, he should not ask it ’3 Idiots’ either.
Success has many fathers. Failure is a Orphan.
So from the previous lesson learnt (from Hello) may be author initially did not want to take the limelight for ’3 Idiots’ , since he was not sure how to movie would do.

I have read the book thrice and saw the movie twice and found both awesome. The story as well as the screenplay is fantastic. To movie definatiely finds its roots in FPS. The characters, the punch lines etc. etc. are all the same.

hi cheetan i am big fan of you. i and my frnds read ur novel 5.some1 long bac only.the film 3idiots has the same back drop of the novel.many incidents are a direct copy from the novel.only a few changes are made in the story and one or two extra items are added which is very obvious.i think the whole credit goes to u.anyways finally ur novel is made into a film.am happy for it.u just rock.

Saw the movie 3 Idiots and liked it a lot. Aamit Khan rocks !! I don’t understand how come some people say it was different than FPS. FPS was the story of Hari (in the case of movie the character named Farhan I suppose) and the movie fully explores the character of Ryan which is good but there are so many scenes and plots taken straight out of FPS.
Nevertheless, it was good work by the makers of the movie to base it on Ryan rather than on Hari and trying to avoid a verbatim depiction of FPS. However, it was FPS throughtout and Kareena had a sister simply to have a ‘mandatory’ happy ending !!
All in all I guess 3Idiots did justice to FPS unlike, for sure, Hello!!

it is as simple as that ,if u had not written the book the movie would have never been made ,its like making paneer but not accepting that they used milk to make it…….so the credit for the movie should be given to u first , then the script writer ,then Mr hirani and then amir khan….cause u gave birth to the idea…u deserve it completley,
I think this is a valuable lesson for you how to sign a contract isn’t it? I am sure getting an idea is the toughest thing. Adapting it to suit you need is no big thing. From my point of view creating something from scratch needs brain and that you have.
I hope there will more good stories in future and I am sure you will allow them to be adapted to the films. But I also hope you will not do the same mistakes you have made while giving rights of “5.someone” to be adapted. Once again keep up the good work.

Sm1 as your book is quiet mesmerising.When i came to know that it is not based on your novel and is a true drama from the producers i was shocked. It’s a big satire, only few concepts have been changed like you being 5 ptr in your novel and Amir being a complete scient typo etc..

I think 3i is based on FPS. I wouldn’t talk about the %. But is FPS wouldn’t have happened ,then 3i wouldn’t even have existed. So story credit goes straight to you. Say FPS is an old song & 3i is a remix of FPS. So credit goes to original song composer not to the one who has done remixing. Because without original song remixing is not possible ……….

The movie was gr8 and over 50 % of the script was from FPS. We are deeply hurt by the makers actions……..

I am a die hard fan of yours and have read all 4 books written by you.Ever since I read five point someone, I have been waiting to see the movie based on it. Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra,Aamir Khan may claim that it is based on a novel written by you and may think it appropriate to mention it at the end of the movie but all your fans know that the innovative plot was yours and yours alone. So hats off to you!!! the movie would not have been such a great hit had the story not been so unique, well written and heart touching.Looking forward to reading your next novel/story soon,

i watched the movie yesterday and i was aghast to see that it is a complete rip off from your book.Forget the percentages whether 5 or 70,Ifeltthe essence,the mood has been lifted from 5.someone.Is it true that you have been paid a pittance for your work.Writers have and will always be treated shabbily in bollywood.

I don’t think you should waste your time in Court…you have to write many more books so that Indians will read them rather than just watching Bollywood films.

hi cheetan i am big fan of you. i and my frnds read ur novel 5.some1 long bac only.the film 3idiots has the same back drop of the novel.many incidents are a direct copy from the novel.only a few changes are made in the story and one or two extra items are added which is very obvious.i think the whole credit goes to u.anyways finally ur novel is made into a film.am happy for it.u just rock.

When compare the overall theme the movie is based on 5.Someone but many things are changed in the movie
I think keeping in mind the common spectators few things added in Movie which is necessary for profit.

hy chetan movie is fab n trust me most of almost 80% of movie is fps….leavin few scenes like baby delivery,rancho actually being wangdu n few more..bt scenes lke they 1st meet during raggin,den at alok’s home dey have dinner,den alok suicide,den der stealin question paper,neha being pia n she givin dem key,den ryan takes alok dad’s to hospital n many more infact itz total visual display of ur novel….

Saw the movie 3 Idiots and liked it a lot. Aamit Khan rocks !! I don’t understand how come some people say it was different than FPS. FPS was the story of Hari (in the case of movie the character named Farhan I suppose) and the movie fully explores the character of Ryan which is good but there are so many scenes and plots taken straight out of FPS.
Nevertheless, it was good work by the makers of the movie to base it on Ryan rather than on Hari and trying to avoid a verbatim depiction of FPS. However, it was FPS throughtout and Kareena had a sister simply to have a ‘mandatory’ happy ending !!
All in all I guess 3Idiots did justice to FPS unlike, for sure, Hello!!
(I’ve finished reading 2 states and some of my friends too have…so how about another book??)

i have seen the movie 3idiots and also read ur book,
it is as simple as that ,if u had not written the book the movie would have never been made ,its like making paneer but not accepting that they used milk to make it…….so the credit for the movie should be given to u first , then the script writer ,then Mr hirani and then amir khan….cause u gave birth to the idea…u deserve it completley,
I think this is a valuable lesson for you how to sign a contract isn’t it? I am sure getting an idea is the toughest thing. Adapting it to suit you need is no big thing. From my point of view creating something from scratch needs brain and that you have.
I hope there will more good stories in future and I am sure you will allow them to be adapted to the films. But I also hope you will not do the same mistakes you have made while giving rights of “5.someone” to be adapted. Once again keep up the good work.

Though i did not think of your name while going for 3-Idiots but while watching it i thought it is completely based upon 5 Pt. Sm1 as your book is quiet mesmerising.When i came to know that it is not based on your novel and is a true drama from the producers i was shocked. It’s a big satire, only few concepts have been changed like you being 5 ptr in your novel and Amir being a complete scient typo etc..

I feel book is far better than movie as they have included many unrealistic sequences which are not there in the book. even though the basic theme is same, climax in the movie is better. credit should be shared between both you and hirani.

I think 3i is based on FPS. I wouldn’t talk about the %. But is FPS wouldn’t have happened ,then 3i wouldn’t even have existed. So story credit goes straight to you. Say FPS is an old song & 3i is a remix of FPS. So credit goes to original song composer not to the one who has done remixing. Because without original song remixing is not possible ……….
